Interesting that even though to date 4 people have managed to become possible authors of this blogg, no comments have been posted........this does not bode well for future 'artistic' discussions! This is at present a closed discussion group and is your chance to express yourself and get credit for doing so, especially if doing the same in class still seems a bit daunting at present.

If you are struggling with the initial task then try this one out for size....

....what are your views of the artist of the day?

Respond with your initial reaction and then reflect on the why, where, how, who, when questions and make an informed comment.

Has your response changed now you know more about it? Does it make a difference to your interpretation once you know the artist's intent?

I like art and I was always fond of it. Most of the time I get great ideas for my artwork but I find it hard to draw those ideas on a piece of paper. I love photography aswell, especially nature photography and I would like that to be a hobby of mine except that Qatar has nothing but a desert.

My initial reaction was that i liked it. Thats because I like the colours used, they work well together. But then when i focused on the actual images i didnt really like it anymore because i dont like the way it was drawn out.

Mrs. Rimmer who is the author and the name of the piece so that i can answer the who what where etc?

Shadi...think outside the box.....Qatar has so much more than just desert...there are beautifully planted gardens, parks and roundabouts, there is an amzing selcetion of archetectural styles, there are the souq areas...the list goes on. A good photographer learns how to capture even the most straightforward of images and make them seem special....start practicing now. I look forward to seeing the results.

My strength and weaknesses - My strength is my believe on my artwork and pieces however my weaknesses is achieving my goal and what I have planned, however throughout the project you may have thought of alternative ideas and add that to your artwork although it's quite complex.

The artist of the day: I like the contrast in the painting. That is because teh bird represents freedom however the thread that is holding the tree's roots is like strangling someone. The artist also thought of the many ways of showing this contrast by color and the way he drew the painting with the leaves on the trees and the texture of the tree's roots. :D!

Mrs. Rimmer- I prefer a natural scene than a human made scene. I don't like taking pictures of what is already an artwork (like the planted gardens), It feels like I'm taking a photograph of picasso's painting.

A fair point Shadi....but how you view something is just as important as what you view. Think about close ups, playing around with lighting, capturing something unusual....a natural element in a built up environment or something man-made within nature. It is good to be focused and sure of what you like, but if your mind is closed to possibilities you miss oppotunities.

The artist of today is very hard to understand as an outside viewer. My first reaction was surprise and a bit of a shock. I did not like the picture at all. I find it very violent and somehow disturbing. Asking myself why the artist could have drawn something like this I did not have an answer except that the artist was depressed or sad. Maybe he also wanted to express a very specific message. The artwork surely has a lot of effect on the viewer. The dark red colours and the black brushstrokes make the painting look very strange. However, I like the idea of having something that looks real (like the faces) in between, or rather behind, these violent strokes. Still, I have a great difficulty understanding the artwork.
